Tip : Formatting USB Flash Drives and Memory Cards with NTFS
Do you have to transfer important information around on your Flash drive?
Are you worried about data security?
Does you flash device have no in built security?
Well if that is the case, you could try using NTFS.
However when you first plug in your drive NTFS is not an option, but it can be
added with a few clicks
| Enter Explorer and select ‘Properties’ by right clicking on any drive. |
![]() |
| Select the ‘Hardware’ tab, select your drive and click the ‘Properties’ button. |
![]() |
| Select ‘Optimize for performance’ and click ‘OK’ |
![]() |
Your drive can now be formatted with NTFS.
You must understand that there is a reason that NTFS is not available by
default, this is that should you not safely remove you device you may corrupt
the disk.
To remove a device safely you will need to use the
tray
icon. but this is good practice anyway.
Whilst formatting some drives you might discover that the format will fail. If
this is the case simply increase the ‘Allocation unit size’ and try again.
